Fire Safety House

The Department continues to teach Fire Safety to all the Kindergarten and First Grade students throughout the City using the Department's Fire Safety House.

We replaced the original Safety House that was built by Firefighters (in 1993) from the remains of a burned mobile home with building materials and supplies being donated by numerous businesses throughout the City. The new Safety House is a 29-foot travel trailer acquired through FEMA. The firefighters retrofitted it to meet the needs for an instructional Safety House, including a smoke room to simulate a smoke detector being activated in a bedroom which permits the teaching of the proper way to escape when smoke is present.

The unit is portable and is taken on site to each of the schools and the students are brought out to the unit in groups of 6 to 8 students at a time. Educating the children about what to do during a fire is still our largest resource to get Fire Safety in the home.
